Overview
Periodontology diagnoses and treats diseases of the gums, alveolar bone and all supporting tissues. Untreated gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss.
Symptoms and Causes
Symptoms: bleeding, swelling, redness, recession, sensitivity, dark triangles between teeth, inflammation, mobility, bad breath and taste. Causes: bacterial plaque and tartar are the primary culprits. Smoking, hormones, diabetes, stress and genetics increase risk.
Prevention
Regular brushing (2× daily, 2 min), flossing, mouthwash and a professional cleaning every 6 months are essential.
